Volunteer Days at the Mary E. Walker House
During 2016-2017, CCMOMC members have gone as a group twice to volunteer for the day at the Mary E. Walker House. Located at the Coatesville VA Medical Center, the Mary E. Walker House is a 30 bed transitional residence for female veterans who have found themselves in difficult life situations and are homeless as a result. It is a wonderful resource for these women to transition them to a successful re-entry into the community, and we were able to learn of this great opportunity to help because one of our MoMs is a social worker there.
On our first visit last fall, our group started the day with some much-needed yard work to clean up the front of the building. It had been neglected and then further damaged by ongoing construction to the area. After enjoying a pizza lunch with the residents, we made a seasonal sugar scrub to leave with them to enjoy, and had a manicure session for the residents to come and get their nails painted by MoMs. That was very well received!
We returned again this past summer to help out again. We were able to finish the yard work and clean up the other side of the building that had been under construction the last time we revisited. Following another pizza lunch with the residents, we opted to get crafty and paint some inspirational rocks for the newly cleaned up outdoor area. The rock painting was a huge hit with the residents (and the MoMs!!) and we were happy to learn afterwards that the residents had placed all the rocks in the flower beds, planted a special rose bush, and ordered a plaque to be placed with the rocks, in memory of a VA drug and alcohol therapist who had recently passed. They also asked to regularly paint rocks as a therapeutic activity, which is amazing!
